The operation of neon tubes and LED tubes
To understand what the greater efficiency of LED tubes lies in compared to the more common and dated neon tubes, it is necessary to understand how they work. How neon tubes work Neon (or fluorescent) tubes are linear elements consisting of a sealed glass tube that contains a drop of mercury and a low pressure noble gas filling inside. At the two ends there are two electrodes which, crossed by electrical energy, produce a flow of electrons that urges the gases to emit ultraviolet radiation which, in turn, pushes the fluorescent material to emit visible radiation, i.e. light. Part of this visible radiation is transformed into heat which heats the tube. All this can only happen with an electrical voltage equal to 400 V, to obtain which a starter and a ballast (or ballast) that provides the overvoltage is required. It is for this reason that common neons do not light up immediately and produce their characteristic flicker before fully ignited. How tubular LED lamps work Tubular LED lamps, or simply LED tubes, are mostly plastic tubes, they contain neither noble gas to ionize nor mercury and, compared to fluorescent lamps, they turn on instantly without the need for a starter and ballast. They do not produce heat, do not emit or contain harmful substances and do not need maintenance. |
